Last year, the Polish architect Krzysztof Kotala of Warsaws 8+8 Concept Studio announced designs for Underwater Dubai Tennis Center, and now he is in talks with potential backers from the States to make the seven arenas on the seabed off the Dubai coast a real proposition. The design features a glazed carbon glass dome above the court and is set to be built near the Burj al Arab hotel and will tie in with the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships which have been hosted in the Emirate since 1993.
Experts have stressed that underwater projects can be tricky to construct, as they have to be both watertight and be built with local considerations such as earth tremors in mind. Underwater projects can be built in one of two ways, by being constructed on land, and then taken out to sea and anchored to the seabed, or by having water drained and then flooded once construction has been completed, in a similar way to how Dubai Marina was constructed. As this project is a large one, then it will need high quality materials, and will have to be deep enough to avoid traffic on the sea. This exciting undersea project needs a lot of investment to ensure that the architects dream becomes a reality in Dubai.
