Dubai has held the title of being home to the world's tallest skyscraper since 2009, but now the race for the crown has restarted as Saudi Arabia resumes construction on their one-kilometre-long Jeddah Tower.
Although the initial construction work began in 2013, multiple delays from time to time caused the construction to be slowed down and paused until it was halted in 2018. Now, they are keen on continuing the work and accomplishing this massive achievement, a massive feat that would earn them the glory of being up in the clouds and the name of being the world's tallest tower.
Jeddah Tower (2018)
Both the Burj Khalifa, standing tall at 828 metres, and the Jeddah Tower, planned to attain a height of above 1000 metres, are designed by famous US architect Adrian Smith.
Eng. Talal Al Maiman, a key stakeholder of the project, said, “Today’s ceremony represents the realization of a vision that took years in the making. Jeddah Tower will serve as a beacon of innovation and a catalyst for growth, showcasing Saudi Arabia’s ambition on the world stage.”
The Burj Khalifa is one of the nation's icons that defines Dubai's desire to achieve higher above all and establishes the city's identity as a global hub of business and innovation.
Construction on the Jeddah Tower, also known as Burj Jeddah and placed as the centrepiece of the Jeddah Economic City project, is expected to be over only by the first half of 2028. Together, both these skyscrapers will stand as a metaphor for the Middle East's ability to realize its vision and accomplish its goals.
