DXB Airport to shut down..."World's Largest Airport" to take place: from DXB to DWC by 2034!

The future of aviation in Dubai is going to boom...like five times bigger and Dh128 billion worth of a boom - DXB airport will shut down...when and why? Let's find out!

All eyes on Al Maktoum International Airport as Dubai puts in terminal mega-expansion plans worth Dh128 billion, making it the World's Largest Airport upon completion. DXB Airport remains the aviation star, for now. DWC is coming in hot!

Dubai loves a good construction operation, loves to hit the big numbers and strike the world with the most innovative and technologically advanced urban revolutionizing creations. With a terminal expansion worth over a hundred billion Dirhams, Al Maktoum International Airport will change the face of Dubai's Economy, Tourism and Air Transport sectors.

Let's talk statistics.

260 million passengers and more than 13 million tons of cargo a year!

This massive project will enable the DWC airport to surpass and eventually replace the existing Dubai International Airport, currently holding the now decade-old title of "busiest in the world for international traffic".

Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum eloquently stated on April 28: “Dubai will be the world's airport, its port, its urban hub, and its new global center." Words that will reflect in the building of this project that is securing future generations with continuous and secure development.

DWC will cover more than 27 sq miles, feature 5 parallel runways and the 4 terminals will then operate 400 gates for the facility to accomodate the 260 million passengers annually.

All operations at the Dubai International Airport will be transferred to the expanded Al Maktoum International Airport by 2034.

DWC will be five times the size of the current DXB: “a new era of smart airport systems and passenger-centric facilities, taking travellers to worldwide destinations in the most awe-inspiring and comfortable way possible”.

The plan is for the first phase to be ready within 10 years and will prepare the ground for the next 40 years of anticipated growth in Dubai’s aviation sector. With this, Dubai intends to create an “airport city” around the expanded DWC and the new urban center will house a million residents and be connected to Dubai via road and transit networks.

As we look into maps and envisioned structures of the one day to-be Dubai World Central - Al Maktoum International Airport, we are certain that the competition in the Gulf is fierce in the pursuit of the biggest, busiest, largest and most advanced airports of the world.
