What is the history of traditional Emirati cuisine?

Emirati cuisine originated from Bedouins native to the country, deriving food staples that are determined by what was available at the time. Consisting of aromatic foods rich in spice or herb including thyme, turmeric, ginger and saffron, Emirati food consists of meats, dairy and grains.

Dates, roast nuts and dried limes called Loomis make up a significant component of most emirate recipes. The main source of food was derived from chickens, pigeons, goats, and lambs as well as fish and seafood from the Arabian sea. Tea and coffee are the preferred beverages containing spices such as cardamom, saffron and mint.

Al Dhafra Restaurant was established in 1993 in the heart of AbuDhabi on Mina Zayed. Where His highness the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan has guided the owner of the group Mr Abdulah Hareb Al Fallahi for the foundation of the restaurant.

Al Dhafra was named after the personal wish of His Highness the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan himself. Al Dhafra Restaurant is quite a translation of the meaning of ‘’Al Dhafra: where the sea meets the desert’’, Al Dhafra Region represents the western part of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, at 80% of the total area of the Emirate.  Some of them are located in the heart of the desert, and some of them overlook the shore of the Arabian Gulf.

Al Dhafra Restaurant represents the authentic significant Emirati heritage. Serving both Emirati and International cuisines from seafood, Mediterranean & oriental dishes to international meals.

With an authentic Emirati character, and for 25 years from the heart of Mina Zayed, the restaurant has presented a rich inherited Emirati experience from the fresh fish market and varieties of genuine Emirati and exquisite international cuisines. While we moved to our new location in the Heritage Park on Corniche Road, we managed to maintain the same unique spirit, style and the same ideal service.

Banquets, buffets or classic superior lunches or dinners all are served and presented impeccably at Al Dhafra Restaurant where you have just quality time with families or friends in AbuDhabi. Make your day count, visit Al Dhafra Restaurant in AbuDhabi and treat your senses and refresh your mood.

A journey into Dubai’s past could well begin through the door of a quaint tea house in the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, once known as Al Bastakiya. As you step into the Arabian Tea House (although old-timers would still prefer to call it the Basta Art Café), you are transported into the old times with unique flavours, authentic style with turquoise benches, white rattan chairs, lace curtains, and beautiful flowers,  enjoying your cup of gahwa (traditional Arabic coffee) in the shade of an old tree and the languid air swoons around you, dreamlike, as if it were always afternoon.
