DJ Sara Gs exclusive Podcast by Dubainight.com

Dubainight presents an exclusive podcast interview with DJ Sara G.
Digital Media Manager at the Rize Group and passionate DJ at night.

Tell us more about your background?

I fell in love with music at a very young age. I played the trumpet, piano and bugle and was in the school band and orchestra. From there, my passion for music just grew. I anchored for CNN for 5 years and then moved into DJing. My heart lies in Old School Hip Hop but I am an Open Format DJ and play a bit of everything.

When did you start DJing?

I started DJing three years ago. I visited a friend’s house, DJ Kungfoo Panda, and he inspired me to get into DJing by taking me on as his apprentice. I learned the old school way (on turntables) from Zajazza who is a brilliant French DJ and Producer.

What/who were your early influences?

I grew up listening to a lot of Old School Hip Hop, Rock and Roll, Country and good old Rock music. My family is very musical and I had a mixed bag of influences, which is why I am now an Open Format DJ and have an eclectic collection of music.

What's your favorite tune of all time?

I am a big fan of Old School Hip Hop and without a doubt, my favorite tune is Jump Around by House of Pain. It’s super catchy and even though I’ve listened to it a million times, I still feel like dancing when I hear it.

What inspires your music today?

Travelling inspires me. Just the feeling of getting on a plane gets my creative juices flowing. Visiting new countries, meeting new people and listening to so many different types of music helps me keep it fresh.

What are the challenges of being a successful DJ today?

With technology progressing at the rate it is, there is much more competition in the market. The only way to face that challenge is to meet it head on and keep updating your skills.

What do you usually start with when preparing for a set?

The best prep formula is to calm your mind and get into the flow. Once you tap into that space, then you can create magic.

What defines a good crowd for you?

There is no good or bad crowd. If you read the crowd right, then any crowd becomes a good crowd.

Why do you think so few women are DJ’s?

For women in the music industry, it is a common struggle to prove your self again and again. If you have the right attitude, then you find the right people who can help you become a successful DJ by giving you the right tools and teaching you how to use them best.

What advice would you give to aspiring Female DJs?

Never give up. My mother always told me, “The world is your oyster”. This is what fuels my never say die attitude.

Where do you think the scene is headed? One year from now? Five years from now?

The sky is the limit. That’s what Dubai teaches you J

Tell us more about your upcoming projects and gigs?

I love music and I love travelling, so I don’t believe in playing in one venue every single night. I prefer going with the flow. I currently have a residency at Tribeca (with Flow Dxb) and love the vibe there but I equally love stepping into new spaces and experimenting with new crowds.
